"The Secret of Kells" — a story from Medieval Ireland
Online lecture
The Secret of Kells is a unique Irish animated film that not only tells the story of the creation of the Book of Kells, the greatest treasures of medieval Ireland, but also engages with important philosophical questions of fear, creativity, and love for the whole world.
During this online lecture, we will immerse ourselves in the world of early medieval Ireland and its monasteries — places of Christian and secular learning and creation of art and books — which persevered against a background of the yet widespread paganism and incessant bloody conflicts. We will discuss not only the historical events and places that served as the basis for the movies, but also about what makes Celtic Christianity so unique.
There is a famous quote by C.S. Lewis: "No book is really worth reading at the age of ten which is not equally (and often far more) worth reading at the age of fifty and beyond." This movie perfectly fits his definition of a good story: it will excite the children, but give plenty to think about even for the adults.
Before the event, participants are required to watch the movie on their own. It can be found on YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV.
